Q. How long have you been working at Dawes and what does your day-to-day role look like?

A. Stephen joined Dawes in 2012, followed by Jon joining in 2015. Both were recently promoted to the role of National Team Leader after an internal restructure and share the responsibility of running the agency, looking after the day-to-day operations and back-office management tasks including developing underwriting guidelines, ensuring legal compliance and managing relationships with the agency’s capital provider, claims provider and key brokers.

Q. Have you always worked in motor insurance?

A. Jon: I’m originally from the UK and moved to Australia in 2010. I’ve worked in the insurance industry for the past 23 years and in the first part of my career, in the UK, I worked as a broker. After coming to Australia, initially on a working holiday visa, I decided to stay and joined AFA Insurance as an underwriting assistant in 2012 working across the corporate travel, worker’s compensation and liability product areas. I joined Dawes as a motor underwriter in 2015 and was promoted to senior underwriter in 2018.

A. Stephen: My first couple of jobs straight out of school were driving forklifts in factories, before I started doing some data entry with one of those businesses. I liked the office work so applied for a role as a claims officer at QBE in Adelaide in the accident and health area. I then moved to RAA Insurance doing motor vehicle claims and when an internal role became available in underwriting hard-to-place and modified cars, I jumped at it. I was approached about a job in insurance broking but decided it wasn’t for me, and moved to Sydney and joined SG Fleet performing novated lease settlements. I didn’t enjoy that so looked for a way back into motor underwriting and landed a role at Shannon’s, before joining Dawes as a motor underwriter in 2012. I was promoted to senior underwriter in 2016.

Q. Are you a car nut?

A. Jon: Half the Dawes team are very passionate and knowledgeable about cars. The other half are just really good underwriters, and I fall into the second category. However I've picked up a lot about cars over the last seven years.

A. Stephen: I always liked watching motorsports and started modifying cars in my late teens. I’ve loved them ever since. I’ve also previously been involved with motorsports events and hope to get back into that in the future.

Q. What do you drive and what is your dream car?

A. Jon: I drive a Hyundai Tucson, which is a good family car. My dream car would probably be an Audi R8.

A. Stephen: I drive a Nissan Navara, but I’ve got a Nissan Pulsar in the garage I’m restoring and modifying. It’s the seventh Pulsar I’ve owned and done up but have owned a number of performance cars from V8’s to a multitude of turbocharged performance cars such as Skylines, Lancer Evo’s, Subaru STI’s. My childhood bedroom wall poster car was a Ferrari F355 Berlinetta and one of those in black with 6sp gated manual (none of this paddle shift/auto stuff) is the dream car, however I’d settle for another 1997 Nissan GTR Skyline.

Q. Is there a road trip you’ve done or would love to do?

A. Jon: I did the western half of Route 66 in the US in 2015 which was amazing.

A. Stephen: The grown-up adult in me would like to take the Navara on the Big Lap of Australia but hiring a Winnebago and driving from Vancouver over to Quebec in Canada and then down to New York, across the US via Route 66 and back up to Vancouver is a big bucket list trip. There are also some amazing roads in Europe such as the The Furka Pass in Switzerland (those familiar with James Bond ‘Goldfinger’ will be familiar with this), the Silvretta High Alpine Road in Austria, The Transfagarasan Highway in Romania and the ever-popular Stelvio Pass in Italy.

Anything with corners!

Q. What do you do when you’re not working?

A. Jon: I’m a pretty good pool player. I’ve won quite a few titles in Australia and abroad and in 2015 I entered the biggest competition in the world in Las Vegas and finished equal ninth out of 984 competitors. I still love it but now I’m a father all my free time is spent with my family.

A. Stephen: When parts are available, I enjoy working on my Nissan Pulsar, but otherwise you’ll find me tinkering around the house and the garden, playing with my dogs, catching up with mates and enjoying a good coffee.
